FURIOUS FIGHTING IN EASTERN THEATRE
The Serbians, according to the news to-<lay, are offering a desperate arid so far effective risistance to the Teutonic invasion of their frontiers, and so far'effective resistance to theans have been hurled back across the Danube. The position, nevertheless, is very serious, we are told, because Bulgaria is about to launch an attack on the Serbian rear. Tho great question is how imich, and how soon, can the Allies put forth their'united strength, and land their soldiers? This aspect of thfi crisis is interestingly discussed pro and con. A very special and urgent effort, it is insisted, must be made, aud that without prejudice to the main theatres in tho East and West, where the real issue is to be fought.' On th 6 Western front German counterattacks are the order of the day, but they are to no purpose, and meanwhile the progress of the French in Champagne and that of the British in ttieir sector is being steadily 'developed. The British submarine exploits in the Baltic have created a state of panic in the Baltic.
