WELCOMING WOUNDED SOLDIERS
Some bungling seems to have occurred in connection with the arrangements for the reception of the wounded and invalided soldiers who returned by the steamer Maitai yesterday. The officials of the 'Defence Department were on the spot, but tho public were conspicuous L>y their absence when the vessel berthed at the wharf, and in consequence the home-coming of the men was not a very inspiring one. The tremendous demonstrations witnessed here on the arrival of the troopships specially employed in bringing l ai k our wounded afford convincing evidence of how deeply the public , admire and appreciate the magnificent services of our gallant troops at' Gallipoli, and there is not the least doubt that ha«d the people generally been properly notified of the hour of landing of the men on the Maitai there would have been uo lack of a warm welcome. How the matter co,me to be overlooked Lv those who have carried out ihe arrangements on previoua occasions is no't clear, but yesterday's experience should bo a lesson to them, and ensure that such an impji'tunfc oversight will not occur again.
