Mr. Austen Chamberlain (Secretary of State for India), in the House of Commons, reporting on General Nixon's operations, said that the 6th Division on. tho Tigris on' Tuesday was completely successful. Several hundred prisoners and many guns wore captured. Tho enemy is retreating on Bagdad; our forces are pursuing. Tho enemy, seven miles east of Kutelamara,following tho riverhank, wlieS' two British brigades, under Gcnr eral Delamain, crossed the river and gained the enemy's position, which was captured after a night march to Kutelauiara. Tho troops strongly' entrenched at night. Armoured motor-cars and cavalry engaged tho Turkish cavalry. The Turkish losses were severe; our casualties were under 500. A largo quantity of munitions and a] any prisoners were captured.

Speaking in the House of Commons Lord Robert Cecil (Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs) said that tho situation in Persia was causing anxious consideration. An attack, instigated by Austro-German intrigues and money, had resulted in tlio occupation of Bnshiro (in tho Persian Gulf), by the British forces. A further attack had been at- . tonintod on Ispahan, and there was no doubt that the Germans had subsidised bandits to creat-c disorder at Shiraz. When tho British Vice-Consul was killed, strong remonstrances were mado to tho .Persian Government. "We expressed our willingness to ease Persia's financial difficulties." added the Minister, "and the Persian Government has promised redress for tho outrages."
