OUR TRAMCARS
Referring to the question of additional rolling Ftock, the annual report of tho Wellington City Tramways Department says: "Eight new cars of the' combination double-cab type woro built and equipped during the year, and, in addition, bodies were constructed for another seven cars, which will be available for traffic immediately the equipment, which has been delayed by the war, comes to hand. During the current year it is proposed to build at least another six cars, which will bring the number of passenger cars up to 110. Although the latest type of car is 39ft. in length, the limited width and space required for the centre aisle reduces tho seating capacity to 37 passengers—a reduction of 11 pa-ssengers as compared with the old Palace type of car, whicli was only-36ft. in length.' In view of the increasing operating cost, the, necessity of some additional cars with larger seating capacity is imperative for handling rush traffic, and as the dimensions of the latest single-deck cars are the maximum allowable by the limitation of width and length due to curves, tho increased capacity can only be obtained by the construction of cars of- the doubledeck type, which unfortunately possess many disadvantages." x |
