FOR DEMOCRACY EMPIRE CALLS FOR MEN-MORE MEN The following appeal is forwarded by Mr. D. M'Laren, who is at present engaged organising 011 behalf of the Patriotic Society:— "Believing that tho Empire is engaged in a supreme struggle to uphold the principles of democracy."—Quotation from a letter of tho United Federation of Labour. . "This is the supreme command that the Empire to which we belong is engaged 111 a life and death struggle to uphold the principles of democracy. Wo havo to choose at once between the autocracy of the 'mailed fist' of German rule or the free institutions of British Government. 0110 or tho other must prevail. "Tho command is to all who can servo that they make their clioico now. Men, capable of bearing arms in defence or that liberty won for you on many a bloody field of battle, tho call is to you. For democracy, lor tho rights of free peoples, for the- sacrcdness of our women and children, for all that true mon hold dear, the call is to you iiow. "Wanted men, more men, register to-, day. Get ready to fight and win. Make no mistake about it, we cannot win unless we do fight. We cannot fight well without training. We want big forces to meet big forces, then British pluck will tell. Remember that all the extra men sent give those who aro thero already a better chance for life. Men, money, and munitions—for service, more and better service of all kinds, the command is to each of us that wo enrol now.

The Empire calls for / soldiers, and wants them double quick; She calls for men to man the works, and ought to have the pick; The world calls, our women call, our children call as well, What's wanted now is men—moro men—to break the power of hell. ' "In face of this stupendous crisis of to-day wo cannot afford to do things in a small way. Whilst continents, nations, Empires, are embroiled, in deadly strife it is criminal to bo petty. Wo must think broadly, feel deeply, act nobly. We must smother our antipathies, sink our personal, local, class, and all other jealousies, and stand four square to the world, a united people, ready to work, fight, give, and die Vc needs be, for, that heritage of freedom our Empire is now struggling to save. The Hun is at our very gates, chanting his Hymn of Hate. Moro bestial savage than any. savage tribe the world has ever known. You, who hug your wealth, take care that it does not turn to ashes in your arms. Think of Belgium and five, think of Franco and give, think of Servia and give, think of the despoiled peoples of the earth and thank God you are privileged to be in a position to give. The official message is cold: 'We want 5000 men more at once,' but it is hot enough wliero the need comes from. "From the trenches and dug-outs, the scarred hillsides, from the far-flung battle-line, eyes of hard-pressed men are turning to New Zealand. To thoir mates here they are calling, 'Buck up, mates, ive want moro men. Register now.' "To those in a position to give, I say: 'Give until it hurts you, theji giro some more for your relief.' To those lit to serve at the front, I say it now : Tho call is l to you that you make ono more for the anise of human right and justice. Register now."
