PRISONERS WHO REFUSED TO ESCAPE

A STORY FROM GALLIPOLI. ; Knowing that the Gorman officers were informing'the Turkish soldiers ;of the awful fate that awaited them -if they foil into tho hands of the Allies as prisoners", tlio British Army authorities have been at some pains to disillusionise the .Turks. Ono legitimate ruse that was intended to havo the desired effect did not (according to one of the soldiers wlio returned by tho. Tahiti), come off. Half-a-dozen, of tho Turkish prisoners were especially well treated and nicely fattened up with- as much good tucker as they could stuff away. Then tlioy were told, to go out and gather wood for tho camp-kitchens, and were led by a non-commissioned officer to a position where tlioy could easily escape to the Turkish lines. Thero the non-com. left them as if by accident, and. returned to the trenches, making sure that his men would get away' to their'own "lines and tell~th'oir comrades of the humanitarian treatment accorded them by tho British. The violet shades of evening were beginning to fill the valleys, and the blue of the Aegean Sea had turned to silver grey, when back came all six Turks loaded up with piles of wood!

Go back to their own lines? Not they! Better cut firewood for British Bey than serve under the pig-dog Germans! It was 3io good. They had to keep their prisoners, -much to the joy of the .latter?.- ' And they had fattened so well! .
