Tlie large business conducted by the well-known firm of Messrs. Suckling Bros., Ltd., was established in ,1871, and lias been carried on by the present proprietors for over 44 years, and is now said to be the oldest in this trade in Christchurcli. The factory is one of the best model factories in tho Dominion, and contains a valuable plant, comprising the very, latest machinery-invented for the trade. This firm was the first also to introduce the Goodyear melting and sole-stitching .machinery in New Zealand, which aro marvels of inventive genius, and the : work done -by'these machines; is stated to be really stronger than hand-sewn. Everything almost appears to be done by'machinery, .such' as solo-cutting,, sole-moulding, 'lasting, pegging, rivetting, nailing, _ 'standard screwing, levelling, slugging, heelbuilding, heel-attaching, heel-trimming and scouring,• edge-setting,, finishing, polishing, and many other processes too numerous..to'mention besides tho use of great machines connected with the manufacture of the uppers.. . All grades of footwear aro manufactured in ladies', men's, and children' boots and shoo hi all leathers, from the finest glace kid to tho strongest working boot, and as none' hut the best tradesmen are employed and tho best materials used, tho various lines manufactured aro quite equal to tho imported articlo in quality and finish. It is quite a revelation to pay a visit to tho factory and seo this hive of industry at work. • Such enterprise should command tho attention and loyal support of tho general public, because in so doing, t|ie money is kept in our own country, besides helping to support tho workers engaged in such, industries and tl:oso dependent upon them.
