HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held on Tuesday. There were present: Messrs. W. J. Howell (chairman), J. Wakehain, W. Galloway, J. Whiteman, and M. W. Welch. The clerk of works reported that the suggestion as to the council taking over the bridge of tho May Morn Estate on the road from. Park's Line to tho junction of. Collins Road would be good if carried out . . . provided they could get an exchange of property and close that portion of. tho road/ leading to the ford. A deviation, could bo. made from the north-east end of the bridge, to connect with the east road about tv:o chains north of the present .junction. The approach to Plimmerton Bridge, which was damaged bv the recent flood, had been repaired. : I'orty-six feet of concrete base had been put down, and a 'good job made. Definite arrangements had also been arrived at whereby a reinforced concrete bridge at Wainui-o-mata was to be erected on the site of tho present old structure. . The council- expressed its willingness to enter into an arrangement with the May Morn Estates, with regard to the bridge only. Authority was received from the Public ; Works Department for an expenditure 1 of .£4OO on the Wainui-o-mata bridge. The chairman was instructed to report on tho claim of the Wellington City Council that the land owned by the Corporation at Day's Bay. was exempt from rates.

Tho New Zealand Cciincil of Education wrote proposing that local bodies should appoint local agricultural committees for the purpose - of assisting in agricultural instruction and development works.—The council decided to hold the matter over till next meeting, the councillors to give consideration to the proposal in the meantime. The council decided to support the resolution passed by the Taumarunui Patriotic Committee; favouring the holding of art nnions and Taffies, provided tho articles to be disposed of were donated. It was decided to donate J25 towards the Upper Hutt Technical School Fund. The amended regulation requiring motor cycte to havo a number on tho T>ack and front of the machine was adopted.
