: 'ALLEGED THEFTS FROM 'AN" HOTEL. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided over a sitting ot tho' Magistrate's Court yesterday. A young man named Frederick George Smith, alias George John Burberry, who was recently found in a drunken coiiditioil irt a room in the Hotel Arcadia and convicted for the same,' again appeared charged: (I) Stealing a silver watch valued at Bs. 6d., the property of Frank Plumptoii, and a muff and work basketj valued at £3 10s., the pro-' perty of Edith Plumpton, from the Ar-, cadia on the same day; (2) stealing a silver thimble, Valued at 10s: 6d., the property of Alicia Hughes on the-same day. from the same hotel. > The evidence was to the effect that accused ivas found in a room in t!ie hotel while some'of'the iniSsifig articles'were' in his possession, aiidsbine,-lying on a. bed there. AVhen charged with the thefts accused made lib reply. i .Accused ..pleaded .not guilty .and was committed to. tho Supreme' Court - for trial. - ■ • OTHER CASES. Gladys Victoria Neilson* a giH of 18 years, married, admitted stealing awatch and chain, valued at £l 55., the. property of Richard Gerard. As_ she was a first offender she was .convicted arid ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. On Mr. T. M. Wilford's application, Frederick Browne was further remanded' for a week on a chargo of wrongfully representing to Arthur John Hoare that, certain articles wero his property, and obtaining on the property the sum of £30. :
Andrew Julius Finlay was again reI manded for a week on three serious charges. Bail was allowed as before. A young woman named Kathleen Gray admitted. a charge of being idle and disorderly in that she consorted with women of ill-fame. Mr. H. F. O'Leary pleaded for clemency on lior behalf, aild she was convicted and ordered to'come tig for sentence . when called ■upon.' . For drunkenness, George Murray and James O'Neill wets each fined £2, in de-fault.-seven imprisonment. The former was declared aii liabitnal drunkard, and a prohibition order taken out against Km. Henry .Greenfield, similarly charged, was fined 205., with the option of three days' detention. Five first offenders wfere dealt with.
