NOTES AND COMMENTS
[BY Qlencoh.l The Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will be held on Wednesday and Saturday Of this we:k. More than usual interest will be taken in this year's fixture owing to the presence of so many visiting horses, due to the fact that the meeting does not clash with any other fixtures. The Hastings trainer, T. Quinlivan, is taking up Red Book and Eligible, and A. Neale and M. Chaate are also taking a horse each, while Glenmore'will go up for the Steeplechase on the second day.
There is a growing practice and a most pernicious one at present being carried on by the aid of the Telegraph Office. The modus operandi is for a spieler or gnesser to sign a well-known jockey's name to a telegram to another horseman, asking him for a tip for the races. Care is taken that an address is put on the telegram by which tlie supposed sender will not get the reply. On the return telegram being received the "guesser" will then approach a backer—often a business man or a prominent racing man—and ask him to bet on the information, which lie takes care to show is from the jockey with a reputation. Another practice very common jiwt now is for one guesser to , wire another and Bign tho name of a prominent rider. By this means people are persuaded to support the supposed good thing. A case ot this sort occurred at Ashburton last week, when a rider received a telegram from Auckland supposedly from a jockey friend, but as the address given by the sender did not coincide with his known address the reply was not sent. It is difficult to know how to check the evil, but backers should beware of the person with a telegram from a jockey.
With an advance of ,£B7BB in the totalisatov receipts for the two days and increased revenue from other sources, tho Ashburton County Racing Club should have a substantial cheque to hand over to the Patriotic Funds. Tho result of tho Chelmsford Stakes, run on Saturday, makes Garlin out to be a great horse, as ho has defeated tho best that Australia could turn out. Wallace Isinglass, who filled tho role of runnerup, is generally credited with- being the most handsome horse in Sydney. Ho is a hot favourite for tho A.J.C. Derby, and has ruled as such all through' the winter. Mountain Knight, the third horse, was the A.J.C. Derby winner last year, and the winner of numerous weight-for-ago events. By general consent he is regarded as the best "weight-for-ago horso in Australia,, so that in defeating these two horses so handsomely, Garlin has certainly put up a great performance, the effect of which will bo to cause him to disputo favouritism with Mountain Knight in the Caulfield Cup, as it is thought that his owner, Mr. John Wren, has designs of repenting the performance of Murmur, who credited him with this Tace. Reputation finished fourth, so tho cable says. The little black fellow would not be in want of a, race, judging by the work he was given recently, so it is possible that our representative is not up to weight-for-age form in Sydney. Still he was fourth, and there were sixteen rumurs, so he was equal to defeating a lot of good ones—the entries contained the names of Waorak, Oarlita, Malt, Mark, and the English horses Red Denis, Half a Glass, and Flippant.
A Press Association cable message received last evening l records the arrival in Sydney of the ex-New Zealand horseman, licslie Hewitt, who has been riding in Europe for the past nine years. Kow was engaged in the Brush Steeplechase at Randwick on Saturday, but as the cablegram makes no mention of him, it is probable that hi 3 owner did not start him. Limolight, winner of the Spring Handicap at Tattersall's Meeting nt Randwick on Saturday, is an imported horse by tally, and, like most of the English horses, lie is well able to hold his own with the Sydney horses. Firm and St. Canvyne, who finished a dead heat for third place, are both first-class performers. The former is one of the best mares in Sydney, and the latter has won at welgnt-for-agt both at Randirick ami
