CRUELTY TO COWS
A GIRL CONVICTED. By- Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, September 10. In tho Port Chalmers Police Court to-day, a woman named Emily Duckmanton and: a girl aged 16 years were charged with cruelly ill-treating two cows; the property of Kate Beatrice Johnstone, by applying some blistering preparation to their teats. A plea of not guilty was entered. The evidence for the prosecution showed that complainant, who resides at Portobollo, and whose husband is at the Dardanelles, had given Mrs. Duckmanton permission to drivo cows through her paddock, but tho privilege was withdrawn owing to it being abused. On August 19 complainant found the teats of the cows blistered by some irritant, which caused them sovere suffering and seriously affcctcd their value. Tho girl accused admitted putting some ointment, on tho cows' teats for a lark, at the instigation of tho older accused, but Mrs. Duckmanton denied having taken any part in the incident. The case' against Mrs. Duckmanton was dismissed, but-the girl was convicted and remanded till Thursday for sentence.
