THE S.S. RIVERINA
SLIDE SPINDLE BREAKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, September 10. Advice ivas recoived at Lyttelton at 10.45 p.m. yesterday that the HuddartI'arker ' Company's steamer ltiverina, which left port earlier 111 the evening for Wellington, had broken down about Jjjventy-fh'e niiles off Addorley Head. Lyttelton was dispatched at 11.45 p.m. to tow her back to port. Tho Riverina was picked up by the tug at about 3 o'clock this morning, when tho vessel was steaming slowly back to port. _ The tug kept beside her for some time and subsequently a line was passed aboard tho Riverina, which completed the voyage back to the stream, whoro sho anchored at about 6.30, with the assistance of the tug. A number of engineers went out to the disabled steamer this morning and as soon as repairs can be effected she will continue her voyage northwards. The Riverina is usually_ engaged in the Sydney-Auckland service and was brought into the East Coast running tills trip in order to relieve tho Victoria which lias gone across to Australia for overhaul.
Messrs. Kinsey and Co., Ltd., agents for the Riverina, state that the mishap to the vessel was due to the intermediate slido spindle breaking at nine o'clock last night when the vessel was 21 miles from Adderley Head. Temporary. repairs were effected by the ship's engineers, but it was deemed advisable to return to port in, order that repairs of a more permanent nature could be effected. The agents intimate that the vessel will not be able to continue her voyage north -until late this ovening.
