DEMAND -FOR INCREASES.; Sydney, September 1. Tho /Northern. District mine-owners have refused-tho men's demands. It isexpected the meii will give a fortnight's notioo beforo tbo time expires for a compulsory conference to be called. [The managers of all tlie colleries in tlio Newcastle and Maitlaud districts on August 24 received notices asking that the wages <f the men working in the mines be increased by 20 per cent., and of the surface hands by 26 per cent. 'Die proprietors' representatives, according to: the "Sydney Daily Tele-graph,"-were not inclined to discuss the position, but the opinion seemed to bo that the present .is not an op-! to'ask for increases. They' pointed out that it was only about three months since Mr. /Justice Ed-; mnnds decided that, the jstate of the industry did not justify general increases, and they claim that the, position is no better now.]
