TEACHERS FOR THE FRONT

NOT TO FORFEIT PROMOTION, There have been a good many references to the position of State school teachers who have volunteered for active service, and who are in many .instances now engaged in fighting their country's battles in tho Near East. Recently tho Wellington Headmasters' Association, tlie New Zealand Educational Institute, and the Assistant. Masters' Association all pointed out by resolution the injustice that would be done if the men who had answered the call were to lose their chances of \promotion. Tho matter was referred'to at tho Education Board's meeting yesterday, when the_ communications from the various bodies concerned were referred to. The chairman, (the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken) stated that tlie matter had been given considerable attention by/the Chief Inspector and secretary, and -as the -result of their deliberations at had been suggested that a list of all teachers who .had' enlisted should be drawn up, and that whenever there was a vacancy affecting any' of tliem their names should be put in .with'those of the_ actual applicants, and- that if on their merits those on service should be entitled to such promotion that would be recorded in his or her favour. ■Tho board heartily approved of the proposal; which was-unanimously adopted. . ' ' : The chairman announced that the Education Department .was prepared to allow the annual increments of teachers on active service to go.on, anil that the time they were, ansent would be conceded as Departmental service. In the case of pitpil teachirs and probationers, and also in the .case of students at the College, a, broken year, will count as a full one. ■'
