MEDICAL TESTS
MODIFICATIONS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. The following instructions for tho examination of recruits, in New South Wales were issued last weok: —Hear-ing,-good; speech, without impediment; intelligence, good; heart and lungs, sound; limbs well formed and fully developed; free and perfect motions of all joints. Men are to bo rejected if there is any indication of tubercular, heart, and other diseases, pronounced stammering, loss or decay of teeth to such an extent «s materially to • interfere with efficient mastication, and defective intelligence. Scars resulting from operations do not prevent a recruit from being accepted, provided they are sound, and the muscles aro well united. Resruits with deformed feet, crossed toes, hammer-toe, and extreme Hat feet will be rejected. In regard to teeth they must have (1) Serviceable incisors, and any opposing molars or opposing canines and bicuspids on the samo sido. (2) Serviceable incisors and canines in both jaws, and well-fitting permanent sets false teeth, upper and lower. (3) Complete upper set, with serviceable lower natural teeth. (4) In cases where false teeih are allowed as substitute, plate must be well fitting and permanent. (5) Temporary plates fitted within three months of extraction will not be passed. (6) Lower plates may bo considered as an advantage, but complete lower sots will not be considered sufficient. It is stated that the regulation barring men with slightly overlapping tees will also be modified, especially in caso of men accustomed to hard manual labour, or sturdy athletes.
