CAPTAIN B. S. HOY. Captain B. S. Hay joined tbo New Zealand Force as second in command of C Squadron. Otago Mounted Regiment. A son of Mr. A. R. Hay, of Dacrc, Southland, he was educated in Invercarsill and at St. Andrew's College, Auckland. He joined the volunteer forces in 1895. obtaining a commission in the Ist (Auckland) Infantry Battalion ("llanl'nrly's Own"). He served as a sergeant in the second South African Contingent, and on returning was awarded the Queen's Medal (three clasps) and the King's Medal (two clasps). He was later appointed captain of the 3rd (Waikato) Rifles. LIEUT. MACKESY. Lieut Mackesy left New Zealand as a scTgeant in the Auckland Mounted Rifles, and was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant. His soldiering commenced in 1901, when he joined the Marsden Mounted Rifles, aud at tho time of enlisting was a lieutenant in the North Auckland Mounteds. He however resigned his commission and accepted tho sergeant's stripes in order to get away immediately. Lieut. Mackesy was born in Canada, and later took up farming pursuits in New Zealand. His father, Lieut.-Col. C. R. E. Mackesy, and his brother, Captain Mackesy, are also serving with the New Zealauders at tho Dardanelles. CAPTAIN JAMES HOULICER. Captain James HoiUker. Major (Actiug-Liout.-Colonel) Selwyn Chambers, reported killed in action, was an officer of the Hawke's Bay Squadron, Wellington Mounted Rifles, and the eldest son of Mr. Mason Chambers, of Tnnroa, Havelock North, Hawke's Bay. Educated at Nelson College he later followed in his lather's footsteps and became a sheepfarmer in Hawke's Bay, where he was very highly thought of by all who came into contact with him. For so young a man he had done a considerable amount of public work, and had been chairman of the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Union. When war broke out Major Chambers, who was a Territorial officer, went away with the Main Expeditionary Forco because ho thought it was his duty to go and for no other reason. He was onyl twenty-eight years of age, and leaves a wife and child of two years of nje.
