RECENT THEFTS IN THE CITY

YOUNG MAN CHARGED

A young man named' Artliur Walter Henderson appeared bofore Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer, tho following charges' of theft:—-(1) The theft of a suit of clothes from William Flanagan; (2) theft of a razor and two tiepins from'W. D. Birkon; (3) theft of various goods from Gilbert Garlick; (4) theft from the Y.M.C.A. of a barometer, field glasses and compass; (5) theft of clothes, the property of Paul Noseda, from the dwelling of William Hedley Bird; (6) theft of a quantity of jewellery, valued at £13 12s. Gd., the property of May Scmple, from the dwellinghouso of Leila Black; (7) theft of valued at £15, tho property of Edith Baldwin, from the dwellinghouso of James M'Parland. All the ofFonces were alleged to have taken place towards the ond of July and the beginning of August. Accused pleaded guilty to ■ the first throe charges, and as the remainder were indictable, lie was remanded en tliem to August 14.

Chief-Detective Boddam said that for somo_ weeks past a large amount _ of thieving had-been'going on in the city, and, in-fact,, it was almost .a'daily occurrence.. In respect to tho first three charges against Henderson, ho had ill each caso pawned .the articles stolen. Accused had been "previously convicted for theft in 1905, and after the expiration of Jiis sentence left the Dominion. Ho had returned recently, and had apparently rccommeaiced operations. The Magistrate sentenced accused to thrco months' imprisonment on tho first charge and ono nionth on each of the other two charges, the sentences to bo cumulative.

OTHER CASES. Mary Barclay was sent to prison for a- month on a charge of importuning. Robert M'Calluin was convicted and discharged for drunkonness, and sentenced .to one month's imprisonment on a charge of indecency. For drunkenness, William Dennehy and Thomas Barry were each fined 205., in default three.days' imprisonment, and William Lynch fined 10s., or fortyeight' hours' imprisonment. Four firstoffending inebriates were dealt with.
