CIVIC AFFAIRS
, MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. .• The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was hold last night. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were present: Councillors G. Frost, J. Godbor, J. Hutcheson, AY. J. Thompson, L. M'Kenzie, J. Fuller, W. H. Bennett, M. Luckio, T. Bush, W. T. Hildreth, J. E. Fitzgerald, R. A. Wright, and W. H. P. Barber. It was resolved that steps should bs taken to have the road through-' the Hutt Park proclaimed a public road, and handed over to tho Lower Hutt Borough Council. It was also decided that the settlement of tho question of maintenance of the Hutt Bridge and approaches bo left to the Mayor, City Engineer, and City Solicitor. The Finance Committee recommended that the Fire Brigade Committee should bs authorised to arrange for ah auxiliary staff of twelve firemen to bo maintained in the Brooklyn, Roseneath, Northland, | Kelburn, Island Bay, Hataitai, and Wadestown districts at a cost of £7 10s. ■per annum per man, and also that they be authorised to make provision for stations and equipment in tho Hataitai and Wadestown districts. Tho committee also recommended that the necessary financial arrangements for 'the above should be provided for this year—The recommendation was adopted. The - Tramways Committee reported that the traffic manager had been giving tlie Aro Street service a great deal of attention lately, and in his opinion there was no necessity for an increased service at present. It was proposed to take records of traffic on this line from timo to time and if an increase took place more cars would be run at rush hours. The committee recommended that the recent deputation should bo informed in terms of the manager's report, and the recommendation was. adopted. The Women's branch of the National Reserve will meet at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
