At a meeting held last week it Was" announced that there was a debit in connection with tlie Mayor's Patriotic Fund, which has been doing good work in connection witli the comfort of the troops in camp, and by the purchase of tobacco, cigarettes, fruit, etc., from time to time. Subsequent to the meeting the treasurer (Mr. C. R. Smith) made an appeal for furtlier funds, and yesterday tho' Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) announced to a Dominion representative that the deficit bad been iviped out by" the receipt of a cheque for £115 from the Hon. \V. H. He expressed the hope that citizens would emulate the spirit of those who had already given to place the- fund in a strong condition, for in addition to tho troops now in camp it was possible that another two battalions would be going into training at an early, date. At last night's meeting of the City Council the Mayor read the following letter lie had received from Mr. Herries :— "Dear Mr. Luke,—l see by an appeal is6ued by you that you require £115 to pay off a deficit in your patriotic funds. I enclose cheque for that amount far your fund."
