. 'AMALGAMATION OPPOSED. The. schoolhouso not being available the meeting of ratepayers to consider tlio proposal of amalgamating tho two Biver Board districts—the Taita and Lower Hutt —under the control of tho Hutt Borough, was held at the residence of Mr. H. A'..W. M'Kenzie, Taita, oil Saturday evening. Tho meeting was attended by tlio principal ratepayers of tlie district. Mr. .M. W. Welch was voted to the chair, explained the nature of the proposal at length, and adversely to its adoption. Messrs. Matoy, Roy, _M'Kenzie, and others who took part in the subsequent discussion were nil against the 'amalgamation scheme: under existing circumstances. Some of the speakers pointed out that numbers of the fascines placed in the river had been faultily constructed, and that a lot of money had been wasted through not expending a few more pounds at the time to -complete the works. 1

The following resolution was carried unanimously:—"That the ratepayers of tho Taita Hiver Board district strongly object to Amalgamation , with the Lower. Hutt Borough', considering that it would not be in .the best interest of tlieir district and that steps be taken to present a counter petition to Parliament." 1
