MERTON'S, THE METAL COMPANY

GERMAN SHAREHOLDERS STATEMENT BY MEMBER OF THE FIRM ByTelcEraph-Press Association-Copyright ("Times" ami Sydney "Sun" Services.) London, August 1. The Morton Company is Included in tlio War Office and Admiralty lists of accredited contractors, but it is impossible to obtain an official statement regarding their contractual relations, if any. Mr. Baer, the principal partner in Morton's, London, is a naturalised German. Ho admits there aro German shareholders in the firm, but declares that he had offered to free Australian contractors from current obligations until six 'months after peace. He affirms that- the Federal prohibition, against Australians 'trading with any company having German shareholders shuts Australia out of the markets of the wdrld, btcause every company everywhere has German shareholders, and lie alleges that there are more Broken Hill and Mount Morgan shareholders in Germany than in Britain. He ridicules the idea of establishing a metal exchange in Australia on the ground that it could not find consumers, except through partly-Germanised sources, and insists that it would bo impracticable to create an industry in England because skilled labour is not available, wliilo capital will not take risks, since after the war German and Bolgian works will bo able to produce cheaper.
