VICTORIA COLLEGE DEBATING SOCIETY
The Victoria. University College Debating Society hold an interesting debate at Victoria Collego on Saturday evening, when the motion "That War is Incompatible -with Christianity" was discussed. The movers (Messrs. W. F. Matthews and P. B. Broad) contended that Christianity, whose underlying principles were peace and universal brotherhood, was essentially opposed to the underlying idea of war, namely, that of a resort to armed force for the settlement of disputes, and was therefore incompatible with it, and that the present war was a tacit confession that Christian standards bad broken down. The opposers (Messrs. H. F. Cotter and J. P. Byrne) maintained that in tho present condition of society thero may be cases where a resort to armed force may. bo the only way by which the State can maintain its inviolable rights; that a war arising in such circumstances would bo just and therefore not incompatible with Christianity; that while the action of a party to the war, as in the present one, may be un-Christian, the war arising therefrom . was not necessarily so; that finally .there was no statement in any authoritative source of Christianity which expressly condemns war at. all costs, and the mere, failure on the part of States to realise in their corporate capacity the high ethical ideals of Christianity which are chiefly individual does not imply any incompatibility with Christian doctrine. Numerous other speakers took part in the discussion, and the motion was declared earricd by a large majority. The judge, Mr. J. A. Hanan, M.P., placed the speakers in the following order:—(l) Mr. P. B. Broad; (2) Miss Park; (3) Mr. J. P. Byrne; (4) Mr. W. F. Matthews; (5) Mr. H. F. Cotter.
