SACRED EDIFICES IN WAR ZONE
TO BE RESPECTED. —-— ' ) By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Zurich, July 27: In reply to Hie appoal of the Powers the Aust'ro-Hungarian Government has promised to respect the churches and sacred monuments in Italy,.if not used' for, military purposes. r - Referring to this matter, the '/Guardian" (London) states: "Not much notice has been taken of the announcement that the British and German Governments -hiiro come to an agreement for tlie protection of hospitals, cihurches, and museums. The announcement-is exceedingly vaguo, since we are told nothing of the geographical limits of protection. If our aviators are instructed to spare Cologne Cathedral—not that such instructions would be needed—the crews of Zeppelins would, we suppose, bp forbidden to bomb Westminster Abbey or St. Paul's. But if Germany can ccme to an arrangement of this kind with, and ill'relation to, England, why cannot it do the same in regard to France and Belgium, arid Russia? Reims Cathedral is still occasionally N shelled; but since, as we understand, ' Germany would no longer take that barbarous course if Re'ms were in England, it is difficult to understand why tliat wanton-type of destruction should \ continue in France."
