MAGISTRATE'S COURT

ASSAULT AND-ROBBERY !A. young man named Victor Fanning Fraser was charged in tho Magistrate's Court, before Mr. L. G. Reia, S.M., yesterday with assaulting a soldier named Timothy; Sullivan, and robbing him of £4 14s. in money and other property of a total value of £5 2s. 6d. Chief-Detective Boddam prosecuted. The evidence in the case showed tliat Sullivan had met accused outside the Dulse of Edinburgh Hotel on the evening of July 21. They went into the hotel, and while there Fraser said he was a wounded soldier back from the Dardanelles, and that if Sullivan would come to his mother's house he would show'him his" wounds: Sullivan agreed to, and they left the hotel, taking with them two bottles of beer. They had travelled a good distance in the direction of Brooklyn,_ when Fraser pointed to a house down in the valley and said, "That's our house."- The pair then sat down, Fraser having proposed that they should have one of the bottles-of beer. Sullivan was in the act of getting up again, when Fraser caught him by tho throat and said, "Say a word and I'll blow your brain's out." Sullivan then received a blow on the jaw which knocked 1 liim unconscious. Whon Sullivan came to, accused had gone, 'while his money and property was missing. Sullivan then informedthe police, and a day or so later identified accused as the man who had assaulted and robbed him. Accused pleaded guilty to the offence, and was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence.

OTHER OASES. 'A young .man pleaded guilty to stealing £2, and was ordered to come up for sentence when called jipon, and to repay the amount of the money stolen. Edward Tanby was fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, fined 20s. with the option of 14 days for resisting Constablo M'Callum, and ordered to pay the cost of a' constable's uniform which he had damaged, in default 7 days' gaol. A charge of deserting his child at Q.uirindi, N.S.W., was preferred against Frederick Edward Joseph i Harrington, and the case was adjourned until to-day. On the application of Chief-Detective Boddam, the charge against Harold Harling Howell of stealing an. overcoat from-Edith AYliito was withdrawn. Wm. Tliorn was remanded.to appear a.t Grey town on August 4 on a. charge of forging a cheque for £6 12s. and -utterinp it to Alexander Murray. Theodore Rickey Joyce was fined 10s., in default 3 days' detention, for drunkenness, and remanded for a week on a charge of forging the name of J. A. Bohorty to a cheque for £2 2s. 6d. Bail was allowed, in £25.

For drunkenness, Ethel Birch and Mary Harding were each fined,ss., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Three first-offending inebriates were dealt with.
