The Russians have rallied splendidly in the area east of th'e Vis< tula, and beaten back the Austro-Germans; who were lately, advancing • impetuously- towards the Russian , railways in Southorn Poland. Enemy .reports.admit reverses in this region. Further reports aver that great German forces are being transferred from the Eastern to tho " iWestorn.theatre, and it is stated also,that Germany is assembling el- ■ derly men and recovered wounded men for service against Russia. Latd - fighting in'the Western area has resulted mainly in' French and British victories, but the battles have been of limited scope. Dr. : 7 Ryerson (President'of the Canadian Red Cross "Association), who has interviewed General Joffre,, is credited with the statement that a great drive by the Allies will shortly begin ,on . the Western front. He quotes General Joffre as stating tliat the Germans will be out of. France by the beginning of next year, and the Germans defeated and the war.over in another year. From the Dardanelles Mr. AshmcadBai'tlett supplies a splendid description of the battle of Juuc 28, which he declares to bo the most successful action fought by the Allies oil tho Gallipoli Peninsula.. ' A movement is 'on: foot in Canada to provide each battalion raised by-the Dominion with machine guns ,in such a number as ; will place tliem on an equality in this respect with the *.m?st-favoured battalions. It- is announced that it was a British submarine. which torpedoed a' German pre-Dreadnought battle-' / ship in the Baltic Sea last week. 'A Turin correspondent describes a ■ great battlo in the "Tyrol, in which the Italians oaptured ,an Austrian position. The Italians are reported to be progressing also on .tho Isonzo frppt, but .enemy reports more ,or less, contest the claim,
