BATTLE IN GALLIPOLI
DECISIVE ATTACK BY THE ALLIES
SEVEN . TRENCHES TAKEN
' CRISIS IN GALICIA
TSAR'S CALL TO THE NATION
VIOLENT : COMBAT IN THE ' ARGONNE •
The feature of the war news to-ilay is Sir lan Hamilton's dispatch covering a successful attack by the Allied forces on the Turkish trenches before Kri.thia. Seven trenches were taken, and an advanco of 1000 yards nmdo towards the ultimata .objective of this phase of the operations, The Australians and New Zealanders participated, hot in the actual advance, but in a, vigorous demonstration on their own front. Brilliant work by the French artillery paved the way for a splendid infantry charge, in which British regiments and Ghurkas distinguished themselves. Up till a' very late* hour last night practically no neivs had come through concerning the military crisis in Galicia, save assertions of further successes contained in an Austrian official communique. The Tsar has issued an- Imperial Rescript, conveying, a •ringing message to liis people of the unbroken unanimity of the Russian nation to prosecute the war to a decisive end. On the Western front the fog of war lies thick, save for a violent combat in the Argonne, in which the French" repelled a heavy attack by the enemy. News from the Austro-Italian front is also scanty, German naval circles hint that a big sea fight is pending between the Italian and
Austrian fleets. The submarine, pirates continue their war upon peaceful merchantmen, regardless of nationality: one of their latest exploits has been to attack a neutral vessel, the crow of which included eight Gormans. ■ The munitions campaign for the armies on the great battle fronts continues. Russia has organised a Board of War Supplies, and invested it with drastic powers of compulsion in respect to the output by tho war factories. The secret recipe for shells has been received in Australia, and the smalt arms works' at I/it'hgow are ready for the 'extra j>ressure upon their output of munitions.
