MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL

RATES LEVIED. A special meeting of the Miramar Borough Council was held last night to make and levy rates for the yoar ending ilirch 31, 1916. The Mayor (Mr. ,'P. Townsend) presided, and there were also present: Councillors S. M. Stone, H. .Hawthorne, J. Pollock, W. H. Green, and S. H. Underwood. The rates were struck in. exactly the same proportion as last year, but the minimum charge for water service was increased to 10s. per annum. At the ordinary meeting of the council, held immediately afterwards, various letters wero dealt with. The Traffic Manager of the Wellington Corporation Tramways wrote with reforence to the extra car leaving Lambton Station for Seatoun at 9.3 p.m. on Fridays. The letter stated that the number of passengers carried on June 18 was 23, while t'ho number on June 25 was 31. It was submitted that this supported tho contention that 9.3 p.m. was the most suitable tinie for tho running of the car. The council, on the casting vote of the Mayor, resolved to approve tho running of the car. It was resolved to ask the tramway authorities to replace the 8.38 a.m. car from Seatoun by an additional car at 8.20 a.m. It was further resolved to ask for an r.'Mitional car from Lambton Station to Seatoun at about 10 p.m. on Fridays. Mr._ R. A. Wright, M.P., advised the council that as a result of an interview he had had with the Minister of Justice, the latter had promised to station a police constable on a convenient part of the Miramar Peninsula as soon as a suitable place could be secured for tho police station. Councillors commented on tho reply as the most satisfactory yet received in regard to this matter,, and it .was decided to thank Mr. Wright for the information. A petition was received frem residents of Ngaio Road and Seatoun Heights asking for the extension of the electrio light service to their houses. It was decided to reply that the matter was under consideration. A letter received from the secretary to the Harbour Board (Mr. H. E.. Nicliolls) stated that at the last meeting of the board it had been decided to grant the council the use of the old boat shed at Worser Bay for the Worser Bay Swimming and Life Saving Club. Tho shed will be free of rent, but the arrangement may bo terminated at the pleasure of tho board.
