HUTT RIVER CONTROL

QUESTION OF AMALGAMATION. A meeting convened by -the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. H. Baldwin) was held last evening at Lower Hutt, and was attended by about 35 persons. Mr. Baldwin stated that -in response to a petition signed by 77 citizens, he had called the meeting to consider the question of the amalgamation of the Hutt River Board by the Borough Council. Councillors M'Dougall and Ball, and E. P. Bunny, J. L. Barlow, A. Macaskill, and M. Welch also -spoke. The Mayor stated that when he first became a member of tho board he had advocated amalgamation, but he had boon informed that a special Act of Parliament would be necessary. In respect to' the saving of expense Mr. Bolwin contended that only about £80 per year would be saved if the board was absorbed, and the question then was: Was it worth it? Mr. M. Welch, a member of the board, expressed the opinion that of those who favour the movement, no reason had been given for the change, #nd added that the board controlled the river economically and efficiently. Finally, a motion by Councillor Ball to the effect that this meeting favours the absorption of tho Hutt River Board I).' the Hutt Council, and desires steps to bo taken to that end was carried.
