Smythe, of the Indian Army.— At Richobourg on May IS, with _ ten volunteers, he carried 96 bombs within twenty yards of the enemy, after two parties had failed. Finally Lieutenant Smythe and two mon, the other eight having been killed or wounded, swam astream exposed to howitzer, shrapnel, machine-gun, and rifle lire. _ Jemadar Mir Dash. —Assisted in the rescue of eight British and Indian officers. Lance-Corporal Angus, of the Bth Territorial Highland Light Infantry.—Sustained forty wounds rescuing a wounded officer. ■ Sergt.-Major Barter, of the Welsh Fusiliers. —When the first line of German trenches was captured at Festnberfc on May 1G lie called for volunteers, and eight responded. Barter attacked a German position with bombs, capturing three officers and 102 men and five hundred yards of trenches. Barter subsequently discovered and cut eleven of tho enomy's mine leads. Lance-Corporal Finlay, of tho 2nd Black Watch.—Led twelve bomb-throw-ers on May 0 at Rue d\i Bois. Corporal Sharp, 2nd Lincolnshires.— Was the first, _to reach the German trenches on May 9 at Rougesbanks, and used bombs with such determination that he himself cleared fiffcv yards of trenches. Later four others joined him, and together thev captured a further two hundred and fifty yards of trenches. Corporal Tipton, Ist Shcrwoods.— > Conspicuous gallantry and rescue of wounded in the same fight. Private Warner. Ist Bodfordshires.— After a. trench at Hill RO had been vacated on May 1 owing to gas, Warner re-entered it single-handixl and prevented the enemy taking possession.
