RUGBY WELLINGTON DEFEAT TARANAKI, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hawera, June 30. The representative match between Wellington and Taranaki was played today. At the outset Wellington set up an attack. Taranaki wore penalised for off-side play, and Tilyard took tho kick, as a result of which Taranaki forced. Play was transferred to ■Wellington territory, where Loveridge had a shot at goal, and Wellington forced. A fine rush by Wellington' was stopped by Twomey, and then Algar made a fine attempt to pot a goal. Taranaki cleared their , line by fine forward work, and Kissick and Colman headed a fine rush. Loveridge just failed to pick up from a bad pass, and lost a good opportunity of scoring. Prendcrville saved. Tho excitement was keen as Taranaki kept up the pressure on the Wellington line, but a free-kick relieved the 'visitors, who rushed down-field in irresistible style. Morris secured and passed, but forward, and a good chance was lost. From the scrum the ball went out to Nicholl, to Morris, who sailed for the line. Loveridge just took him and the ball out. Taranaki cleared finely, and Cameron .found the line. Back came Wellington, and gave their opponents a busy time defending, Loveridge and Colman doing good work. At length Wellington sent the ball, out to ; Tilyard, who, finding himself blocked,' passed in to Wilson, who dashed over the line. Tilyard foaled. Wellington, 5; Taranaki, 0. fter very even play Taranaki worked up the field, where Colman made a good attempt at goal from a penalty, the ball striking the bar. Immediately after Wellington were forced. Good rushes on both sides followed, but no 'score resulted, though Taranaki were having the best of the play. At the opening of the second term Taranaki rushed down the field and almost scored. Give-and-take play followed, until Wellington worked up-field, and from loose play Wilson snapped up the ball and scored. No goal resulted. Keeping up the pressure Wellington played with fine dash, and from- a loose rush Frances secured and dashed over. Tilyard converted. Taranaki livened up and tried hard to cross the line, ana their persistence was at length reward* ed. From a penalty, Colman landed a fine goal. Play was now very exciting, but Wellington had much the best of it. Algar tried to pot a goal, and Taranaki forced. Both sides played gamely, the Wellington backs doing some fine passin. At length the ball was sent out to Ryan, who got over. No goal resulted.. Taranaki rushed down-field, and being awarded a free-kiok Colman converted.
