Entertaining the Council or Eduoatlon. Dr. W. J. Andorson, Director of Education. and Mrs. Anderson entertained tho members of the General Council of Education, who held their first meeting in Wellington yesterday, at an afternoon tea. which was given in the Pioneer Club yesterday afternoon. It is only very recently that the council has been formally appointed by the Minister of Education, and it has the distinction of including among its members four ladies, viz., Mrs. Beatrice Esther Talbot, M.A. (Auckland), representing tho interests of tho education of girls; Miss Phoebe Myers, and Miss Emily A. Chn,plin, representing the. women teachers of the North Islandand Miss Christina M. Cruickshank, for the women teachers in secondary and technical schools: also members of the council: Mr. T. R. 'Fleming, Mr. George Hogben, C.M.G., Mr. Edward Corrigill Banks, Mr. J. R. Kirk, the Hon. ,T. G. W. Aitken, Mr. C. H. Opie, Mr. T. U. Wells, Mr J.'Caughey, and Professor Macmillan Brown. ■ Dr'. and Mrs. Anderson received their guests in the large common room, which had been decorated with spring flowers —freesias. white and yellow narcissi, and quantities of birch ,foliage. A long buffet placed at the further end of the room for tea and coffee was also arranged with narcissi and violets, Mrs. Anderson fro re a navy blue gown with a long fur coat and small block hat with osprev plumes. Among those present, in addition to most of those already mentioned were: Mrs. Massev, tho Mayor and Mayoress. Mrs. Coleridgo, Sir Robert Stout, Sir Edward and Lady, Gibbes, Mr. Donald Robertson and Mrs. Robertson. Mr. and Mrs. La Trnbe, Mrs! Digges Smith, Miss Barrand, Mrs. Hogben,. Mrs. Fleming, Mrs. Gill. For Trentham Camp. Mrs. Massey acknowledges receipt of fiction and periodicals for the Trentham Camp Library and measles patients from the following Mrs. Sydney Itirkcaldie, Mrs. Harold Myers. From Feilding, per Mrs. Watson, 3 cases; Miss Braud, Miss Halse, Mr. Ernest Anderson, and from Marten, per Mr. A. H. Knigge.
The drawing of the art union for the crochet afternoon tea cloth made byMiss Joseph was held yesterday morning, and was won by Mrs. Barnicoat, of Tinakori Road.. Her number was 307. As a result of \the art union, the sum of £60 is to bo added to the • Belgian Distress Fund. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool attended the Poultry Show yesterday afternoon. The Island Bay Ladies' Guild is intending to hold a sale of work at St. Thomas Hall, Newtown, on Friday and Saturday. The proceeds of the sale are to bo divided between the Belgian Relief Fund and our Wounded Soldiers' Fund. ' A number of excellent stalls are prepared, the Island Bay : ladies being well known for their good work. A baking competition is announced, and a guessing competition for a bridal doll. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool has consented to open the bazaar on Friday afternoon, ana the sth Regiment Band, will be in'attendance oil Friday evening, and the Mission Band on Saturday. Mrs. Peat, and Mts. Preston wish to thank all who so gprierously- assisted them . with the St.. John Ambulance produce stall at the recent Carnival bazaar.
