SHIPPING PROBLEMS
QUESTIONS OF CONTROL. At the New Zealand Farmers' Union Conference next month the following remits will bo moved:— North Canterbury :—"That in view of tho high rates of freight on goods between the Dominion and the Homeland, and of tho probability of a still further increase, this conference is of opinion that in tho interests of the people of Now Zealand, producers and consumers alike, it, is advisable that steps be at once taken to devise some means of securing the control of the shipment of goods and produce to and from our shores, and that for this purpose the Dominion Executive of the Farmers' Union be asked to place itself in communication with all kindred organisations or societies in order to give effect to the above suggestion." Wellington:—"That in view of the present high shipping rates and the desirability of such charges resuming normal as soon as possible after the war, the Dominion Conference be urged to set up a Shipping Matters Committee, to co-operate with any similar committee of Chambers of Commerce or other organisations." Otago"That the conference urge that steps bo taken to inaugurate a movement so that, when the present war is over, steps may be taken to prevent shippers being entirely at the mercy of shipping companies."
