HAWKE'S BAY MEETING STEEPLECHASE WON I3Y SOPORIFIC. (lly Tolotrapli—Special Correspondent.) Hastings, Juno 18. Tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Mooting opened in splondid woathor. Tho courso was in excellent condition, and although thoro wcj'o many spills, tho jumping was vory good. Tho attendance, oltliough fail', did not coma uij> to expectations. Tho totalizator takings totalled -Ciy,97l, as against -Cl-(,1(i5 at tho corresponding mooting last year. On looks, Bollin overshadowed tho fiold in tho Hack Slcoplockaso, but Grey Kouoivn was better supported on tho machine. At tho skirt tho grey look charge and led from Pareniata aud Fond Memory. Tho doublo brought down St. Fire, and Morry Lad rau off. I'arcmata was nearly down at tho gorso at tho railway. Grey lienown led past tho stand from Fond Moiuory. Tho two were woll clear of the fiold, and at tho sod wall Groy Renown gained sovoral lengths. Fond Memory had reduced tin gap considerably at tho last fence, and an interesting race was promised, but Gioy Renown fell, leaving Foiul Memory to win by a furlonjj troni Bollin, who jumped 6lowlv. Pelican and Country Boy wcro tho only others to finish, l'nromata fell at tho last wall tho last time rcund.

Tho imported Heather Mixturo was tho final choice for the Hack Handicap, and ho won, but only after putting up a good performance, for ho was at Iho rear of tho field at tho six furlongs post. In the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, Hereford carried tho bulk of tho support, but lie shaped very badly, and after being prominent for a mile and e half he fell away, beaten. Waipunoa, who was allowed to roturn his supporters more tban hoshould have, got up in the last stride, and won from Cornelian. The winner was vory sore, and was piving tho leaders a big start at one 6tage of tha race. Aruake was in command till the last fenco, when Cornelian got up. on tho rails. Player ■was well supported. Ho shaped fairly well, but should do better with a Taco into him. Vi and Braeburn toppled over at the first fenco. Soporific, the fanoy in the Steeplechase, stripped a trifle on tho light side, while Glenmore bore a bulky appearance. Leapuki looked well, and so did Tho Diver. At the double the first time Leapuki ran off and Naupata fell. Soporifio jumping well, led from Glenmore and. The Diver, and for a couple of . rounds thero was little in it beside the trio. At the doublo the second time Maku fell and Bonny came down at the sod wall. Soporific and The Diver left Glenmore at the six furlongs in the last round, but at the sod wall the favourite cleared it best' and gained a couple of lengths. They were together , again at tho Hencoop, when the favourite again gained an advantage, but H. Thompson took matters rather easily, and in the run homo he only scorcd by a neck, after a scene of oxcitenent. Glenmore was a long way back, third, and Sportsman was the only other to finish. Tho winner went kindly .for' Thompson, but the rider named was hardly at his best, and had to be assisted to weigh. The stewards inquired into the handling of the winner, but after hearing the explanation of Thompson decided to take no action. H. M'Sweenev, rider of Naupata, broke his collarbone Kia. Toa and Scrutineer were withdrawn from the Hack Hurdles. Ruatangata, Hurakia and Doon were evenly supported, and the trio were in it at the last fence, where the first-named fell. Hurakia and Doon then had a good set to, and in the last stride the latter won by a head. Brunswick, who had made tho running for a while, finished third. The others were outclassed. After the Tece Thompson, rider of the winner, had to receive medical attention, and it was found that his collarbone had been broken when Braeburn fell in. the Hawke's Bay Hurdles. The last race was the best betting event of the day. Beldame, Wild Lupin, Ardent and Blackheart were all evenly fancied. It was nearly dark when the race was started, but the colours of Hymettius and Boldame were always prominent. At tho bottom of the straight Ardent came from the rear, and, outstaying Hymettius, Tie won by a length. Beldame was two lengths away, and then came Haumakaka, who was finishing very fast after coming from a long way back.
