Speaking at a meeting at New Plymouth, Mr. W. 11.I 1 . Nit oil referred'to the very decided improvement in the quality of the milling wheat grown hi ■the Taranaki district during the, last few years. When ho first came to 'l'aranaki, he said, he had a very poor opinion of local-grown wheat for milling purposes, hut in the last year or two he had seen samples which were quite up to the average milling wheat grown in . .Canterbury. A fanner in a Cape Colony paper writes to say that many farmers in that country have not grown lucerne in tho quantities they should do. Ho mado thousands of pounds out of it before •his neighbours took to it. Another fanner—one of the small men who dot the countryside—with 210 acres, says: —"I may mention that I have at pre- . seut, in prime condition, 105 oxen, seventeen cows and calves, 10 horses, 550 ostriches, and a lot of slaughter 'sheep, and have already saved about twenty tons of lucerne hay for winter, 'with about ten acres under wheat and j oats, and I could feed double the num- ; hor of stock." y- - ■ —
