TRENTHAM CAMP

PREPARING FOR THE WINTER

IMPROVING THE STREETS

The Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Allen) paid, a visit to Trentham camp yesterday afternoon to see for himself what improvements were needed to provide for the comfort of the men during the coming winter. "I have been very anxious about the reading of the camp," said the Minister in conversation, with a reporter upon his return. "We'are going to use every effort now to put the roads into good' order for the winter. Something has already been done, but a good deal remains to be done, and this last heavy rain rather caught us on tlie hop. Today I told Colonel Potter, the Camp Commandant, and also the Chief of the General Staff, that if they wanted more money for the purpose it would be available.

"Of the hutments, twenty-two are row occupied, but they are rather overcrowded at present. We have rather more than 100 men in every hut, but that state of affairs is only temporary. The huts are being finished fairly quickly now, and every day we shall have one or two more'available. They will, I think, prove very satisfactory. . The building of them has been a vary big undertaking, and even yet the Publio Works Department want more carpenters for the work."

Mr. Allen stated also that to relieve the congestion and wear on the parade ground, he was trying to obtain the use of the Trentham racecourse as a training ground. The electric lighting installation was now well .under way. he said, and lie was assured by Mr. E. Parry, the Chief Electrical Engineer, who was on the spot, that it would he completed before many weeks, and then the.whole place—streets, huts, canteen, institutes, halls, and all the other building.,—would be. electrically lighted.
