A RECORD WEEK

NEARLY 4000 CITY MEN SINCE . AUGUST

Last week was a record recruiting week in Wellington. The total number enrolled was 312. Saturday morning's registrations numbered 2i, including three for the Maori Reinforcement draft-.

The previous best week was 234. Last week's recruiting day by day shows tlio following figures:— Monday 88 Tuesday SO Wednesday 50 Thursday 33 Friday 70 Saturday morning 21

Total for 5} days

The improvement last week is at the rate of 3d per cent, on the previous record week. The average per day was 57. The men enrolled in the City to date number 3967.

The Extra Force which was offered to the Imperial authorities and accepted by them about six weeks ago is now being assembled at Trentham camp. Men arrived from north and south on Saturday, and yesterday the Waliino, Pateena, and Monowai brought up a further large number of men from the South Island. There are now close on 7000 men being trained at Trentham.

The manager of the Commercial Bank, Wellington, handed tho following statement to a Dominion representative on Saturday:—ln view of recent statements in the Press that certain banks are refusing their employees leave to enlist, and seeing that two banks are mentioned as an example to the contrary, it is only fair to state that the Commercial Bank has at present onesixth of its Now Zealand staff either enlisted or at the front, besides about 100 members of its Australian staff similarly absent. Full salary is paid by the bank for the month in which officers leavo duty, and half salary thereafter, their position in tho bank being kept open and their interests in' the bank's provident fund preserved. The recruits who enrolled at Buckle Street on Saturday were:
