The "Taranaki Herald" thinks the rooruiting officers should be given a little more latitude in the tests put to men enlisting. It says:—"While it is disappointing to learn tihat the Government finds it necessary to say that rooruiting for tho infantry is not quit# satisfactory, we believe the Defence Department has itself to blame in some degreo. In Taranaki the response to the call for men has been ready and ample, yet here it is a fact that men are complaining that their services are not accepted ior trifling reasons, and they are kept in suspense after having offered their sen-ices. It is difficult to reconcile this fact with the statement that the position is now- so urgent that married men.should enlist. At tho sam© timo it is stated that tho regulation 10 height will not bo altered unless it is absolutely necossary. It seems to us that the lists of qualifications and requirements needs overhauling. . . . But in order to give recruiting officers a little more latitude, the conditions aB to age, height, and weight might well be modified to read that men 'should be,' not 'must be,' of a stated standard. Then a man who in overy other respect is quite fit for service need not be sent back because his fortieth birthday has passed, or because ho cannot quite react tho sft. 4in standard."
