ZEPPELIN RAID ON SOUTHEND

_ , _ ~ , „ London, May 27. several Zeppelins dropped twenty incendiary bombs at Southend. A Zeppelin was seen coming from tho north-east at 10.50. After circling Southend, tho bombs continued falling. It is evident that another Zeppolin participated. For half an hour in quick succession lights were followed by heavy thuds. The other Zeppelin bombed the western quarter of Southend. Crowds watched the bombardment. Two houses were ignited, but the flames were extinguished.
The Admiralty report only mentions one Zeppelin, and states that the casualties were two women killed and a child badly injured. Little material damage was done.
Aeroplanes and seaplanes chased the raider, which escaped, going east.
Amsterdam, May 27. A German official message mentions a "successful aerial bombardment of the fortifications of Southend."

Mnnv shops sold out, except for mouth-piece respirators made of non-inflammable celluloid or rubber, with motor-goggles to protcct the eyes.
