ASSISTING A BOOKMAKER
4 A CASE IN DUNEDIN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, May 26. The hearing of the charge of being a 3jookmak«r preferred against Frederick Matthews recently was continued in the Police Court to-day. The Police contended that the defendant, who made a bet with Daniel M'Laren, who was alleged to be a bookmaker,, was a principal instead of a bettor. To-day the Polico asked for an amendment of the information so as to' constitute an offence as under :— That Daniel M'Laren, on March 5, at Dunedin, being a bookmaker, did bet'on licensed premises, to irit, the Grand Hotel, and that Frederick Matthews did assist in the commission of the offence. Mr. Hanlon, for the defendant, objected, but the Magistrate, Mr. Widdowson, allowed the alteration. After the hearing of evidence the Magistrate reserved his decision.
