BILLIARDS

The results of last night's play in the Alcock billiard-diner tournament were as follow:—

G. Hemingway (received 100) beat Stevens (received 50)_ by 20 points. This contest created considerable interest, as bcth players are old opponents at" bowls. The balls ran rather well for Hemingway at the critical stage of the game. W. F. Nees (received 50) beat A. J. Mills (received 76) by a narrow margin. Both players showed considerable skill; and a fair knowledge of the game. W._ Fraser (owes 30) beat V. Dimock (received 100). Dimock held his own rather well against his opponent in the earlier stages of the game, but once Fraser got tho "feel" 'he scored consistently and well. The best breaks were: Fraser, 37; Nees, 35. This evening games will be contested by Messrs. GoTdie and Player; Hart and Billman; De Latour and Jacobson, and two others.

Those who avail themselves of the Union Steam Ship Winter Tours to the South Seas in order to miss our colder climate have now the added attraction of the Grand Pacific Hotel at Suva, where a delightful stop-over can be made. 1 his very fine reinforced concrete building, with its spacious verandahs, balconies, and roof garden—from which a glorious view is obtained—is unquestionably tho Hotel-de-luxe of the Pacific. It and the fine new hotel at Apia constitute such modern, convenient, and comfortable accommodation for sojourners, that tho South Seas Trip, which always possessed glamour of its own, should now become doubly enjoyable. . On Friday evening at the rooms of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers a paper will be read bv Mr. E. P. Turner, Superintendent Engineer of the Christchurch Tramways. The lecture will be illustrated by limelight views and ■.5 expected to prove to bo of an interesting and instructive nature. The attention of members, of the institute is drawn to a notice in our advertising columns. °
