MYSTERIOUS TRAGEDY
THREE DEATHS MUHDER AND INCENDIARISM (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright,) Melbourne, May 19 A mysterious triple tragedy has occurred near Geciong. The house of thomas Morrison, who is absent in hospital, was discovered on fire, the doors being fastened. Morrison's son, twelve years of age, was found dead, sitting in a chair in the kitchen. Ho had a gunshot wound in the head.
The charred corpses of Mrs. Morrison and her brother, Daniel M'lntosh, were found in an adjoining bedroom. A gun was on the floor. There is 110 clue, or any attributable cause, for the tragedy. EARLY CI.OSING FOR HOTELS BILL IN VICTORIAN STATE ASSEMBLY. Melbourne, Mar 19. In the Assembly the Premier '(Sir JL Peacock) Cftvs notice of motion to introduce a Bill making hotel hours from 9 o clock in the morning to 9.30 at night, during the war period, instead of 6 to 11.30 as at present. In reply to a question, the Premier said tile Government did not intend to submit the nuestion of early closing to a referendum.
TOTAL ABSTINENCE MOVEMENT IN BRITAIN. London, May 18. In Glasgow 170,000 total abstinence pledges during the period of the war hare .boon stalled. This represents onosixth of the population.
NATIVE CRIME IN PAPUA A DIMINISHING QUANTITY. Melbourne, May 19. Judge Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, denies that capital crims among the natives of Papua is increasing. He points out that there were seven murders of whites during the five years prior to Commonwealth control, while there were only four during th« last eight years. The punishment of a native murderer of a European was invariably death. The pacification of the territory was proceeding satisfactorily. A RECENT AFFRAY.
ATTACK ON EUROPEAN PLANTER. (Reo. May 19, 9.40 p.m.) Melbourne, May 19. Details of the recent affray at Papua, in which four native police and a European named Clark wore murdered by natives at Robinson River, show that after massacring the native police, the natives attacked a settler named Clay (not Clark, as previously reported) and looted and burned his plantation. Clay was seriously wounded, but escaped. The police captured twelve of the natives concerned in the outrage.
SEE OF GOULBURN DR. RADFORD APPOINTED. Sydney, May 19. Dr. Radford, Warden of St. Paul'» College, has' been elected Bishop of Goulburn. The. Rev. Lewis Bostock Radford, D.D.. was born at Mansfield, England, in 1869, and educated at St. John's College Cambridge (B.A. 1890, M.A. 1894. B.D. and D.D. 1908). He was for a time a master at Warrington Grammar School, from 1596 to 1902 was vector of Forncett, St. Peter, and from 1902 to 190S rector of Holt. He is editor of the "Australian Church Quarterly Review."
"YOU HAVE NO RIGHT EXCITING INCIDENT IN BRITISH PARLIAMENT. (Rec. May 19, 7.40 p.m.) London, May 10. During a debato in the House of Commons. Mr. F. N. Charrington, a wellknown Temperance reformer, rushed through the door of the' Chamber, went up to the table, and dragged the mace to tho floor, shouting: "You have uo right to make " Before he could say any more, attendants and morabcrß seized him roughly and hustled him out of tho Chamber, amidst intense excitement.
Mr. Charrington, who gave up a large fortune in the brewing trade to engage ill temperance work, sought to interview a member of the House cf Commons. Ho entered the Chamber after his ejectment, and was taken in custody by the House of Comtaons police. Mr. Charrington. explained that he wished to protest against the Drjnfc Bill.
