AUSTRALIA'S SECOND SUBMARINE
LOST IN THE SEA OP MARMORA OFFICERS AND CREW IN TURKISH PRISON (Rec. May 19, 7.40 p.m.) London, May 19. The Admiralty has presumed the loss of the Australian submarine AE 2. It i 3 understood that throe of the officers and seventeen of the men on board are prisoners of war. The High Commissioner reports:— London, May 19, 3 a.m. "The Admiralty announce that a report from Turkish sources states that Submarine AE 2, of the Royal Australian Navy, was sunk on April 30, while endeavouring to enter the Sea of Marmora, and the crow taken prisoners. "A further report, which comeß through diplomatic chaunels at Athens, states that three officers and seventeen man were taken prisoners, out of a total of three officers and twenty-nine men.
"No communication having been received from tiic vessel since April 26, her loss must be presumed."
The Australian Navy has now lost both its submarines. In the early days of the war, the Submarine AE 1 was wrecked in Pacific waters, while on patrol duty. All hands were lost.
