THE FRENCH VICTORY AT CARENCY SPLENDID ELAN OF THE TROOPS. London, May 18. The "Times" correspondent in North France says: "The story of th'o storming of Carenc.v has increased the confidence of France. It is proudly noted that tho infantry wore overjoyed on leaving the trenches where they. had been stuck during the winter. The feeling is increasing that it is permissible to shortly expect something more than sapning and mining, "Red Cross trains arriving in Paris are full of men in the highest spirits, proudly waving branches of lilac taken from the gardens of Carency.. Writers of letters from Carency are absolutely confident that the advance will be continued."—("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) T HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT Tho High Commissioner reports:— London, May 18, 4.30 p.m. "In Belgium tho Germans left on the ground about 2000 dead and a great number of rifles. Tho French havo consolidated the positions recently taken. During the night tho Germans attempted a particularly violent counter-attack after a bombardment by guns and bombs, but were repulsed. "On the road from Aix Noulette to Souchez the French, by their fire, stopped dead two German counter-attacks. "In a night action the French took a group of houses near tho ccmetery at Ablain. , "On all the front north of Arras tho artillery combat continues day and night. The Germans are particularly set on bombarding Arras.
