CARNIVAL QUEEN
At a meeting of the executive, held ■yesterday, it? was reported that tho chairman, Mr. H. G. Hill, had received a letter from Mr. C. R. Smith, secretary of the Mayor's Patriotic Committee, enclosing a cheque for £50 for tho fund, and congratulating the socioty on having taken the movement in baud.. It was repm'ted that tho band marching competition in connection with tho band contest promises to be a great success, and quite ouo of the star events of tho carnival. Messrs. Begg and Co. have donated a staff valued at £10 lOs.. and the Bristol Piano Co. are donating a shield to bo compoted for annually.
It was reported that the following offers have been received: —Staff of Messrs. J. Godber and Co. have undertaken to make a three-tier wedding cake, valued at £12, and two other cakes, to form prizes in an art union; SLA., parcel of 18 boot insoles; Mrs. Nightingale, use of motor-car; D.I.C. and Bristol Piano Co., window display; Messrs. George and Kersley have offered to erect on their premises a large electrical Queen display for the purpose of announcing the position of Queen The Government have' offered to illuminate the various Government Buildings; L. G. Porter, free advertising spaco on his hoardings. The Entertainment Committee reported that they are arranging to hold a patriotic musical and elocutionary competition during the 'course of the Carnival, the public to be the adjudicators in the evening. • Professor Cardston reported that all the Queen Committees were getting to work with a will, and the election promises to be the keenest ever held in New Zealand. He also reported that tho society's motor-car was attracting a lot of attention, and should considerably swell tho fund.
The chairman stated that all voting coupons bear his name as chairman, and that no others are genuine. Side-shows Committee reported that Barton's Circus was lending one of their bi" tents, and also several horses and mules.
The tramway bojs are going to make a big effort to put their candidate at the head of the poll, and several schemes are proposed, amongst some that are suggested is that they will give a pierrot entertainment in the Park on June 3, 4, and 5. The band is to be made good use of, and a number of willing strong oommittces have been sot up.
