Signor Salaudra and Baron Sonnino, whose Government 2ms just lesigned, had resolved on war, believing it to bo the only solution to preserve Italian honour.
Signor Giolitti's supporters who form teh Parliamentary majority hitherto supported the Government. Italian feeling during the last three months has undergone a remarkable change. Tho old enmity to Austria has been. _ superseded by an anti-Gennan sentiment There is growing anger against German methods. A strong section of the Giolitti party are agitating for peace at the pries Austria is prepared to offer, but it is doubtful whether Signor Giolotti is prepared to wreck the Cabinet to come into power on an anti-war polioy. The "Popolo Romano" publishes an exposition on the military situation, suggesting that the Germans had ten army corps to crash upon Italy like an avalanche and devastate Venetia and Lombard?.
It is stated that the King gave? on audience to Prince von Bulow, and asked what guarantees Italy had that the concessions would be permanent. Von Bulow replied; "The word of Germany." The King answered: "It is too late in the day for suoli a' gauarantee to be acceptable."
M. GTolitti formed liis first Ministry in. 1913, and after a dissolution in tie following year, due to serious strike riots instigated by the Socialists, was returned with a strong majority, consisting of members pledged to support the constitution against Socialist attacks. In March, 1905, Signor Fortis succeeded M. GTolitti as Premier. Baron. Sonino took office with a Cabinet of the Goitre and Loft in February, 1906, but in May of the samo year \r?is succeeded by Sicnor G olitti, wlio lot.iined office until December, 1909. He wps followed by Baron Lonino, who held uflice until the folloinnp March/ when Signor Luzzatti came into power with a Cabinet in which tlie Radical clement predominated. He resigned ill March, 1911, and Signor Giolitti once more became Premier, but was succeeded in 1914 by Signor Salandra.
