HUGE SUCCESS IN SYDNEY

(Rec. May 14, 8.15 p.m.)

w .Sydney, May 14. Jjolgian Day, which strong committees, under the direction of Mr. Hugh \\ ard, wore organising throughout New South i Wales for weeks past was a splendid success. The weather was fine until late in the aftornoou, when rain interfered.

The city was beflagged and decorated, and was given up to an army of collectors, street pageants, and all manner of attractions and money-making dovices. Auctioneers at street corners and elsewhere wore selling, and re-sell-ing flags and largo quantities of valuable donated goods at fancy prices. The Government temporarily suspended tho law to enable raffles to be drawn. The central function in every municipality of the State was that the Mayor read the toast: "The Restoration of Belgium, New Life to Our Brave Allies, Long Live the Heroic King Albert I" At the Sydney Town Hall, after the reading of the toast and the message received by Mr. Hugh Ward fioin tho King of the Belgians, thanking the people of Now South Wales for tlieir hearty_ support of tho Belgian cause, tho immense gathering wfldly responded to Sir Gerald Strickland's (the Governor) calls for cheers for King Albert.

Everywhere the movement received enthusiastio support and promises to realise the committee's aim—a world's record Rift day.
