SOME HANDSOME DONATIONS

Mr. E. J. Hill presided at last night's meeting of the oxecubive of the New Zealand Patriotic Society. Enthusiasm nas marked during the transaction of business, there being an attendance of seventeen members altogether. _ A summary of work accomplished, as a result of daily meetings of the committee, was the subject of a report by the chairman. Sub-committeee had he said been formed and business was proceeding very satisfactorily. A motorcar had been purchased for the use of the executive, and it was proposed _to give it away as a prize in a. guessing competition. A speedometer had been fixed on the car, and the public would be notified that the car would travel in Wellington and various parts of _ the province on patriotio carnival business, and would be stopped on a certain date. The number of miles travelled would be the subject of the truessinn;. The conditions included a clause that no member of the executive could purchase a ticket in the guessing competition. The position of the Queen nominations was that a total of elevon_ had been received to date, including six from i Petone and tho Hntt Valley. In re-1 card to the church parade on May 23, the Prime and the Minister | of Defence.had signified their intention of being present and giving all possible facility to the executive's recruiting scheme. . Arrangements had also been made with th« Postmaster-General that there should be no charge for postage on any of tho carnival correspondence. This was a 6plendid arrangement and meant a donation of at least £200 to the fund. Satisfactory railway arrange-, ments were also being made. In co'nnec- | tion with the recent visit to Levm, the chairmA'n was pleased to announce that the ladies were going to run a produce stall at the carnival, and devote the whole of the wofits to the funds. The district was also goin" to nominate a _ candidate for the Queen of the Carnival. Mr. Pricn. of the drafting staff of thc_ Public Works Department, was assisting bv providing twelve posters (a sample of which was before the meeting) of a khaki soldier, under German fire and musincr unconcernedly to light his pipe. Further, the chairman reported _ a very handsome offer from the _ proprietors of picture theatres as indicated by the following letter from Mr. E. J. Righton, chairman of the Wellington Picture Theatres"l have, pleasure in informing you that the proprietors of the Wellington Picture Theatres have met and otter assistance to the forthcoming carnival in the following direction '(1) They will take_ kinematograpb picturos of the Carnival Queen and screen same in theatres known. as Empress, Shortt's, Britannia, 1'..P.P.. New Theatre, Everybody's, King s, and Star (Newtown). (2) They will also prepare and screen suitable matter giving publicity to the carnival. (3) Ballof boxes to receive voting papers can be placed in the vestibules of tho various theatres. Voting papers can be purchased at the ticket boxes._ (4) They will assist the procession with a suitable display, (o) At the carnival itself they are prepared to arrange a stall and sell tickets for admittance to picture theatres, such tickets being provided by the proprietors of the theatres named, amounting to 6000 in all. the tickots to give admittance on any night except the night of the carnival and Saturday nights. The whole of the proceeds from the sale of auch tickets to go to the funds. An orchestra will be in attendance at the stall as •a further attraction.'" A National Fund. The following resolution was carried after lengthy discussion and consideration :— That the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Patriotic Socioty enlarge the scope of the funds for the forthcoming carnival by (a) Creating a National Fund of voluntary aid to which New Zealand as a whole will be asked to contribute. (b) That a deputation confer with the Mayor and. wait upon the Prime .Minister to Jay before him the above proposals, and askr for the assistance from all Government Departments, etc., towards accomplishing the desired end. The deputation to include the local M.P.'s and all members of local bodies. (0) That the Mayors of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, together with three Wellington gentlemen, the latter to be appointed by the Mayors mentioned above, be asked to accept the position of Trustees of the Niyional Fond. (d) The Board of Trustees shall have power to administer the funds, and appoint committees in any part of New Zealand to investigate all cases in that district. (e) The hoard shall administer the funds in accordance with the resolutions previously adopted, viz.:— (1) 75 per cent, to be devoted to providing for incapacitated New Zealand soldiers and sailors, who have bccome so .incapacitated as a result of active service, and for the dependents of those New Zealand 1 soldiers and sailors who have lost their lives while on active service. (2) 25 per cent, to be handed over to trustees to make donations to St. John Ambulance for, the purpose of providing medical equipment, etc., fop our troops at the front, and soldiers and sailors during convalescence, also for contributions cf such guilds or societies operating in a similar manner as the trustees may approve, any balance to go to the main fund. Professor Owen Cardston, carnival organiser, forwarded a lengthy report containing suggestions for the whole, of the outdoor and indoor entertainments connected with tho movement. The "xecutive considered the report in detail. , ■ A meeting of the Side-shows Committee of the Queen Cirnival was held last nilht in the Y.M.C.A. Rojms, kindly lent for the meetings. It is reported that negotiations are well in hand for the importation of a large number of novelties from the leading Australian pleasure park's.
