MUNICIPAL BATHS

LOSS OF £44 FOR THE YEAR. Wellington's two municipal baths do not pay their ■ way. Wellington is not peculiar in this direction, as sucli utilities rarely do earn enough revenue to balance the expenditure. The receipts for t'he financial year ended March 31. amounted to £606 7s. 6d., and the expenditure to £650 17s. 3d., which briefly means that the baths at Te Aro and Thorndon cost the City the sum of 17s. Id. per week the year round, which is not a very exorbitant demand, considering -the. inducement the City is offering the public to bath for nothing at Lyall Bay, Island Bay, and Evans Bay, which TiriiiKS in revenue through the tramways. Receipts 102 13 0 113 11 7 Expenditure... 303 17 7 281 13 4 The above return is of interest as it shows that the popular Te Aro baths, though exhibiting £17 ss. 3d. less profit than the previous year, made £156 14s. lOd. over and above expenditure, which excellent return _is nullified b.v the gradual waning in popularity of the Thorndon baths, which show a clear loss of £201 4s. 7d. on the year's working, end a falling-off in revenue from last jear's figures of £30' 18s. 7d.
