H. , Field, M.P., has (says the "Manawatu Herald") received a reply from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. H. D. Bell), who says:—"An inspector is being appointed under the Scenery Preservation Act to look after the Pafa» paraumu Scenic Reserve, and it is expected. that he will be able to prevent any further destruction of native birds on that reserve. In order to give the inspector wider powers it is proposed to also appoint hirn a ranger under the Animals' Protection Act, and he will thus be able to prevent the destruction J of native birds on lands adjoining the | reserve. I highly appreciate the interest 1 you take in our native birds and will do all I can to protect them, and will be 1 pleased to have any lands declared sano- ' tuaries under t-lie Animals' Protection 1 Act if the owners agree and particulars ' of the areas are supplied." The late Private Wilfred J. The death of Mrs. S. A. Slinky, an old Dovonport resident, which took place on Friday morning, breaks a link in tho connecuon of Auckland families with the romantic story of Sunday Island, in the South Pacifio (says an Auckland exchange). Mrs. Spinley was the granddaughter of Mrs. Baker, ona of the earliest isttlers on the island. The deceased lady, who was 52 years of age, had been a resident of Devonport for thirty-two years. Death was preceded by an operation two or three days ago.
