TORNADO ON EAST COAST

TE ARAROA POST OFFICE SUFFERS SEVERELY. The'little settlement of Te Araroa, on the East Coast, about a hundred miles north of Gisborne, was struck by a tornado yesterday, and the post office was much damaged. In her report to the postal authorities, tho postmistress states: — "A tornado and lightning struck the post office during the gale at 10.45 a.m., and did • considerable damage. The chimney on the western side snapped, and the top half was blown on to' the roof. Two windows and the back door were smashed. The roof on the eastern side was considerably sprung. The office itself is several inches out of plumb. All maps and posters were blown clean out. The outer fence of the enclosure was destroyed and carried across, the road. The western end of the material shed was blown in, and tho window broken. AIL tho telephone wires were blown down, one only remaining."
